If you are like me you may be tempted to throw anything that is lying around in your clothing closet just to get it out of the way. This may seem okay in the short term since it is out of site and out of your way but it can result in making your closet a total mess and make it very difficult to find the clothes you need. This is only one of the culprits that can cause a closet to become a mess here are a few more.
If you live in an area that has distinct seasons where you actually have a need for heavy winter clothes in the winter months it is ridiculous to have these bulky items in your closet all year. You should have a separate area for winter clothes and lighter clothing. The ideal situation is to have two separate closets. Since I live in South Florida, I really don't have this problem.
Never put office supplies in your clothing closet. Things like ink cartridges, reams of paper and so on should be kept in their own closet so that they aren't taking up the space that should be occupied by things like shoes and other clothing related items.
Another definite no-no when it comes to clothing closets is storing linens such as sheets, blankets, towels, and washcloths in the same area as your clothes. Again, just like winter clothes these items are far too bulky and take up way too much space. Keep them in a linen closet where they belong.
Another culprit that is often found in clothing closets is a vacuum cleaner. Again, this is a bulky item that can take up much needed space for shoes and it should be kept with other cleaning related items like dust mops and brooms.
This next one may seem a little strange but some people do it. Do not use your clothing closet as a place to store canned goods. I know it sounds crazy but people do it. If you don't have a pantry find a cabinet maker to make you one that is portable that you can take with you if you move.
Don't use your closet where you keep your clothes be used to hide your important documents like passports or birth certificates. It is best to purchase a small personal lockbox so that you can keep the items in a place where they will not become lost or damaged.
By adhering to these suggestions and avoiding committing some of these clothing closet offenses you will find it much easier to keep up with your clothes and it will be much easier to find things when you need them.
